Coffee and cake with friends

Coffee and cake with friends

A painted sketch from yesterday afternoon, with friends enjoying coffee and birthday cakes at Sarah's house. Friday afternoon, two o clock, everything stops for coffee. It's our tradition dating back about seven years. Before that, we used to meet for coffee on Friday mornings while our children played in ball pools :-)
This is the kind of subject I always want to paint. An hour wasn't quite long enough but I'm pleased with what I got down in that time. Managed to eat cake and drink coffee too, of course.

  1. Lovely tradition to keep. We get so busy that sometimes it's really hard to take time out. Glad you do it and thanks for sharing your lovely sketch.

    1. Thanks! I'd like to paint another version of this, get a bit more info in, but I do like this little thing just as it is :-)

  3. Glad to see that your priorities are in the correct order!
You'll be glad to hear that I have found a wonderful place 10 minutes from my home for some plein air painting.
Now I just need to weather to cool down a little. Please send some of your winter to Australia!

    1. That's brilliant Carol! I heard you were in the middle of an extremely hot summer over there - we, meanwhile, are expecting snow any day! Hope you can get outside soon :-)

  4. I would consider this done. We artists tend to go too far with the detail. I love the sketchiness. It gives the imagination more leeway. Is this an oil sketch?

    1. Thank you Nancy. Yes it is an oil sketch and I agree with you. I often think something needs 'finishing off' but then I decide not to in case it loses it's energy. I think it would be better to start a new one if you want to see how far you can push something.

  5. Gosh you are busy Haidee. I did notice you sleeping a bit in Venice but presumably there's no time for that in UK? I wish I had your energy and commitment! I do enjoy your blogs - forgive me for not always commenting. See you Wednesday - getting very excited about Ken's show.
