| Snow on the beach, Sutton on sea |
Yesterday I thought it might be nice to have a change from painting snow, so headed over to Sutton on sea again and would you believe it? I was amazed to find the beach was covered in snow!
So here we are - first time I've ever painted snow on a beach and I think it's the first time I've ever seen snow on a beach...
I used one of my 8" x 16" wooden panels for this, and at the time I was really unsure about how it was going but after getting it home and warming up (and quite a few favourable comments) I've really warmed to the painting too. I think the snowy beach looks like a snowy beach, and that's a good thing!
Last visit here was in November, and I did a similar format painting looking exactly in the same direction...

Love the sky and the tones/colours in the ground/snow are in perfect harmony. Brave to venture onto the beach...not much shelter to be had there...clearly worth it though as you've ended up with a real winner.

DeleteLovely radiating sky tones - love the subtle green passage on the right near the horizon. Quite a Pastelly effect, in fact I thought you'd done a Pastel at first! A cracker..

DeleteIt really does look like a beach with snow on it, well done! I've been struggling with a frozen lake that doesn't look like one, so I am impressed. I hope you got your chips and mushy peas afterwards.
ReplyDeleteDid you varnish the board first? How did you find it compared to gessoed canvas or other boards you've used? I'd love to hear more.
Thanks Bobbi! I used two coats of clear gesso (Winsor and Newton) on the boards which gave it a rather nice tooth, felt like a sandpaper to touch. It did seem more absorbent than usual though, the first paint I put on mixed with lots of turps did 'bleed'. I don't know whether another coat would help with that. I'm keen to keep the colour of the wood as a base :-)
